Introduction to the School of Geographic and Environmental Sciences

The School of Geographic and Environmental Sciences was founded in 2008 on the basis of the former Department of Geography, which was established in1941. The school is a very important base for Guizhou Normal University to train geography teachers for middle schools, colleges and universities, to train professionals in the fields of geography and biology. More than 4800 undergraduates and postgraduates graduated from school made great contribution to the cultural and economic development in China.

The school has a strong teaching staff with 13 professors, 26 associate professors. Among the 65 staff members, 10 hold doctorates and 2 are now applying for doctorate; more than 10 have been granted State Council Special Allowance, Tsang Hin-chi Education Foundation Award, Guizhou Excellent Young Science Talents, and Provincial Experts etc.

The school is composed of five disciplinary sections (Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Sciences, Gardening and GIS & Remote Sensing); Physical Geography and Human Geography are key provincial disciplines, Environmental Sciences and GIS & Remote Sensing are key University disciplines. The school offers programs leading to bachelor’s degree and adult education programs in the fields of Geographic Science, Resources and Environment Management and Urban Planning, Geographic Information and Gardening(Geographic Science is a special major of Ministry of Education). It is authorized by the state to offer programs leading to master’s degree in the fields of Physical Geography, Human Geography, GIS and Environmental Sciences. At present, the students’ enrollment is nearly 1000.

There are also 3 labs, including the Geographic Information System Lab, the Physical Geography Lab and the Provincial Key Lab of “Guizhou Mountainous Information System and Ecological Protection” (jointly set up). In addition, a lot of advanced instruments and equipments are available, such as atom-spectrometer, laser grain size analyzer, colored drawer and scanners. The school has Rock and Mineral Specimens Room, Paleontology Herbarium and many Practice Bases for students’ practice.

The research of the school is involved in the fields of Karst Geology, Soil and Water Conservation and Rocky Desertification Management, Regional Physical Geography, Regional Planning, Land Utilization, Tourism, Environmental Protection, Map Compilation and Gardening etc. The school made great achievements in some fields and was cooperated in some research with the USA, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, France, New Zealand and Slovenia etc. During these 7 years, more than 100 scientific research projects have been accomplished, including 22 items of national and international projects and more than 50 items of provincial projects. The research funding accounts to 20 million Yuan, more than 700 scientific papers and more than 10 books have been published.
